What are the benefits and potential downfalls of working for a company from home?

Working from home as an employee of a company is another employment choice that can be undertaken by mothers at home. There are occupations such as copywriter, graphic designer, public relations officer, programmer and editor, where some employers will now allow their employees to work at least part of their hours from home. Similar to self-employmentand franchisesthere are certain elements that need to be thought through.

Working from home as a company employee has many benefits such as:

  • Job security
  • Company benefits
  • No large financial outlay
  • These elements make this choice of home employment very appealing when comparing this to the financial outlays and job insecurity offered by self-employment and new franchises. But there are some downfalls of working for a company from home. For example you may only be allowed to work part of your job from home, which may mean that you have to go into work for part of the week. Depending on employees schedules at work this may or may not be regular hours/days, which could impact on a household (babysitting, day care or school) that you could otherwise structure around self-employment or franchises. The other potential downfall is productivity this is in terms of what level would be expected of you because you are working from home? Is your home/work environment conducive to this level of productivity? Or will your employment spill over into your leisure time?

When deciding whether to work for a company from home working mothers should consider their job type, hours required, work space and required job security. This is in order to weigh up the pros and cons and make and informed decision regarding this job option.
