Studying At Work

Returning to university or college study while you are working (full or part time) and caring for a child can be very difficult.

When expectant mothers are nearing the birth of their child they are often focussed on finishing work and preparing themselves emotionally and physically for the new addition to the household. It is then in the months or years

after the birth of their child that thoughts of returning to work begin. The contemporary workforce is fluid and even a short time removed from it can impact greatly on your career progression. Further education, whether it is a university degree, college diploma, TAFE certificate or a short course, can ensure that your skills and industry knowledge remain current.

The logistics of balancing children and work can be extremely difficult before adding study into the mix. There are however many options for study and education on offer from various institutions that can make the transition easier. Most universities offer part or full time, internal and external study options. Depending on the degree you are undertaking you could complete the entire degree externally. Many TAFE's and colleges offer night school and short course options. Some employees (such as universities) allocate their staff a certain amount of study time (paid) each week/fortnight. There are also such institutions as Open Universities which offer students external study courses from a selection of universities. They also offer introduction to university courses within their degree structures for those who have not previously completed university study.

Studying externally can allow you to complete your education when it suits your time frame. It is a good resource as you can complete your assignments at night time, when the children are in bed, or at the weekend. An external unit will have very clear guidelines and there will be real university staff, such as tutors and academics to help you with the material. Furthering your study in this way can help to stabilize your career or work trajectory.
