This is the third article in our series and covers the subject of working mothers, franchises and working from home.
Franchises are another employment choice that can be undertaken by mothers at home. There are many types of franchises available to choose from and again a little bit of research can help you make the right choice for your situation. Similar to self-employment there are certain elements that need to be thought through.
Before you make any financial decisions regarding your potential franchise, you also need to decide whether you are going to undertake this by yourself or as a joint project. There are pros and cons to both these choices. If you undertake a franchise alone you may have to opt for a smaller franchise, which you can operate part time. But, if you undertake a franchise with your partner you may lose household income that previous jobs provided while the franchise is getting off the ground. Obviously there are other choices such as gathering a group of mothers or other family members together to start a franchise.
This joint option is something to be considered, especially when you are choosing a type of franchise. If you choose a franchise that needs you to leave the home, then having several members would allow you to work around each others child care schedules. For example if you had a gardening franchise your members could rotate such duties as orders, administration, gardening and babysitting.
There are many franchise options that can be worked into individual schedules. There is a lot of research and opportunities readily available from the web. Such examples are
Franchise Opportunities: Directory of Franchises and Businesses, Franchise New Zealand and Franchise Council of Australia. A little thought into what type of franchise you can commit to and what is available can help you to make an informed franchise choice.
