Work at Home: Self-Employment

© Angela Thomas-Jones

This is the second article in our series and covers the subject of working mothers, self-employment and working from home.

For working mothers self-employment can be a suitable working option, if they have the means and time to operate a business. Self-employment, in the context of this article, will refer to those home businesses that are not linked to any other employers (such as a franchise or working for a business from home). Examples of self-employment, in this context, would be something like a music teacher, seamstress, writer or an online store proprietor. When choosing to operate a home business, there are a few elements that must be considered:

  • Capital
  • Ongoing Costs
  • Space
  • Time

One example is if you wanted to start an online store. An operator would need to work out how much money will initially be required to purchase a website name, wholesale stock, packaging and postage. You would also need to consider ongoing costs such as advertising and website fees. Another aspect to consider is where the business will physically be set up. Does your home have a spare room or workshop where stock can be stored and orders kept track. Time is also an important factor. How and when are you going to operate this business around your children? These elements need to be considered in order for working mothers to distinguish the scale of the business that they wish to undertake. A little research and planning can reveal if self-employment and working from home is economically viable. For example, in the case of an online business, it might be easier to use a facility like an eBay store instead of having a personal website.

If you have never run a small or home business before it is probably a good idea to seek financial advice. This is not necessarily because some of these businesses can be financially risky or in need of a bank loan, but there is lots of tax information that you will need to be aware of. If you are looking at undertaking a large-scale business you may also want to find an accountant who has dealt with other clients who operate similar businesses.
